Anemophilous Formula for Computer Art, Owen Mundy/Joelle Dietrick (US)

Inspired by Jim Campbell’s Formula for Computer Art and Tallahassee’s recent sea of tree pollen, Owen Mundy and Joelle Dietrick created a short flash animation referencing new forms of cross-pollination and re-use. Made to be meditative and aesthetically pleasing, the format parodies recent computer art that simply crunches data to create useless forms. The diligently recorded data of the National Allergy Board guides the animation down a predictable path and stands in stark contrast to the chaos of everyday life.

The piece made with Flash, and uses ActionScript to interpret actual pollen data (American Academy of Allergy Asthma & Immunology) during March, 2007. The ambient soundtrack was recorded in a neighborhood in Tallahassee, Florida, where Joelle and I run.

About the Creator

Owen Mundy is an artist who is currently pursuing an MFA at the University of California, San Diego. The grandson of Indiana farmers and once a photographer in the Navy, his work considers issues of class, middle America, and the relationship between art and all potential audiences. Using his BFA in Photography from Indiana University, he co-founded the nonprofit community arts organization Your Art Here, started yourarthere.net, and continues to make community-based artworks. Born 1973, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, USA, Joelle Dietrick works in a variety of visual media to consider the stories of female expatriates. She has shown in New York, Los Angeles, San Diego, Tijuana, Rome, and Beijing, and she currently teaches digital arts and drawing at Florida State University.
